Last week I visited the Port Health authority operations at Tilbury. The Port Health authority is responsible for making sure that food imports are safe and to fight the import of foreign diseases. That means making checks on the contents... of containers ad running checks t ensue that products are what they say he are and meet UK standards.
The service is provided at Tilbury with support from the City of London.
It was a revelation to see the efforts that the health team take to make sure that all imported foodstuffs that come through Tilbury ae safe. With Tilbury being the port of entry for so much of our imported meat products it is a vitally important function.
I have said before that there is considerable effort made by many agencies at Tilbury to stop things from coming in that shouldn’t. Whether it is smuggled tobacco, dodgy food or illegal immigrants, Tilbury leads the way in maintaining the security of our borders.
I am grateful to the City of London for continuing to fund the Port Health services and pay tribute to its staff for the important work that they do.
