Demi Fawehinmi is a very ambitious young man from Chafford. He broadcasts under the name MadeInChafford encouraging young people to show an interest in politics and current affairs.
What strikes me about this impressive young man is the real leadership he is showing in his community. Demi’s family come from Nigeria, but having chosen to make their home in Thurrock they have thrown themselves into playing a full role in their community. This is their home. They want it to be the best it can be.
It has been suggested by members of both the Labour Party and UKIP that those of us who choose to make our home here have less of a stake in the future of Thurrock than those whose families have been here for more than one generation. Nothing could be further from the truth. Everyone who lives in Thurrock has a stake in its future. It is offensive, divisive, narrow-minded and wrong to suggest otherwise.
For my part it is now nearly ten years since I chose to come to Thurrock. I did so because I care deeply about the future of my country. To secure a Conservative Government I knew we had to win in Thurrock so I put my money where my mouth is and moved here. I am proud to be Thurrock’s advocate in Parliament and proud of the place I have made my home. Thurrock should embrace the talented who choose to make their life here, not treat them as second class.
